Why watercolour suits beginners

Watercolour is forgiving in the one way that matters: it rewards quick, loose work rather than precision. A few washes produce something that already looks like a picture, which keeps motivation up in the first weeks. And the kit is small enough to fit in a bag - many painters work at the kitchen table or outdoors on a bench.

Materials: less, but right

The paper decides more than the paint: real watercolour paper from 300 gsm does not buckle and forgives corrections. The most common beginner frustration comes from thin printer paper, not from lack of talent. A small box with twelve pans, two brushes and a water glass lasts for months. Courses often provide materials, so buying can wait.

Painting in company

Watercolour groups meet in studios, adult education centres and increasingly outdoors - a park bench, a market square, a harbour. Painting side by side is quiet, sociable work: little talk during, plenty afterwards when the sheets get compared. Nothing teaches faster than seeing five interpretations of the same view.

Tips for getting started

Buy proper paper first, paint second - it changes the result more than any brush.
Work from light to dark; in watercolour you cannot paint light back in.
Let layers dry fully before the next one, or the colours turn to mud.
Keep your first attempts. In three months they are the best proof of progress.
