What helps against loneliness – an honest look

Loneliness is more common than most people think, and it has little to do with the number of contacts. What eases the day, what holds long term, and when it needs more.

What helps against loneliness – an honest look

Hardly anyone talks about loneliness, although it is widespread. In German surveys, roughly one adult in ten regularly reports feeling lonely often; among young adults and people over eighty the figures are considerably higher. Anyone who feels lonely is anything but alone in that – it is just that nobody mentions it.

Being alone and being lonely are two different things

You can spend an entire Saturday by yourself and feel excellent. And you can sit in a full office, talk all day and still be lonely. Loneliness does not measure the number of people around you. It measures the gap between the relationships you have and the ones you need.

That explains why the advice to "get out among people" so rarely works. More contacts alone do not close the gap. It takes contacts of a particular kind: ones that recur, where you are allowed to be honest, and where you yourself are needed.

What eases things short term

On a bad evening no life plan helps. What helps is making the evening smaller. A few things that reliably shift something:

  • Get outside, even without a destination. Twenty minutes outdoors measurably feels different from twenty minutes on the sofa – and it needs no arrangement.
  • A place with other people and no obligation: library, café, swimming pool, park. Being among strangers is not company, but it is not nothing either.
  • A message to an old contact, for no reason. Two sentences will do. The reply rate is higher than people fear.
  • Something with your hands. Cooking, tidying, fixing. That interrupts the circling in a way screens usually cannot.

Tipp: What helps short term replaces nothing. It only stops one evening from pulling the whole week with it – which is little, but on some days it is exactly what is needed.

What holds long term

Long term only one thing works: regular encounters with the same people. That is unspectacular and inconvenient, because it takes stamina rather than a decision. A weekly slot where the same faces turn up changes more after three months than any single brilliant event.

A second point often gets overlooked: being needed. Anyone with a task – volunteering, in a group, in the neighbourhood – has a reason to show up that does not depend on feeling sociable that day. And that is exactly what carries you on the days when you do not.

The third point is the hardest: you have to tolerate that it feels wrong at first. The first few times in a new group are uncomfortable, for everyone. Take that as proof it is not working and you stop shortly before it starts to.

When it needs more than a plan

Loneliness can turn into depression, and it can be a consequence of one. If the drive is gone for weeks, if sleep and appetite are off, if nothing brings any joy, or if thoughts of ending your life turn up, then this is not a case for good advice. It belongs in professional hands.

First points of contact in Germany: the Telefonseelsorge on 0800 111 0 111 and 0800 111 0 222, free and around the clock, and 116 123 across Europe. To find a therapy place, the appointment service of the statutory health insurance physicians can be reached on 116 117. That is not a sign of weakness but the fastest route to someone who knows what they are doing.

A realistic start

Not everything at once. One recurring slot in your own area, attended three times before you judge it. If it does not fit, the next one. What counts is not choosing correctly on the first attempt but having something in the calendar that repeats at all.

Wegbegleiter365 is built for exactly that: groups with fixed meet-ups, real people from the area, no pressure to find anyone. If you are only looking for company, you never have to enter the singles area.
