Language cafés exist because the hardest part of a language is not vocabulary but the first sentence spoken to a stranger. An evening of relaxed conversation does more for fluency than a week of exercises - and it costs nothing but the price of a drink. Most cafés are run by volunteers or community centres and are open to anyone who turns up.
How a language café runs
Usually you sit in small groups at tables, often sorted by level, and talk for an hour or two about everyday topics. Some cafés switch languages after thirty minutes so everyone is alternately learner and native speaker - that role swap takes enormous pressure off. Mistakes are expressly allowed; corrections mostly happen only on request.
More than language practice
For newcomers to a city, language cafés are one of the fastest routes into contact: everyone there came to talk to strangers, so nobody has to break the ice. Many groups spill over into shared cooking evenings, city walks or film nights - the language is the occasion, the acquaintances are what stays.
Tips for getting started
- Go twice before judging it - the first evening is always the most nervous one.
- Bring two or three topics you can talk about; it takes the pressure off silences.
- Ask for corrections if you want them, otherwise most people will let mistakes pass.
- Swap contacts with one person per evening; tandems often start exactly there.

From roughly A2 it gets comfortable, but complete beginners are welcome too - many cafés have their own starter tables. Understanding matters more than speaking flawlessly.
