Line dancing

Line dancing

No partner, everyone in a line, everyone doing the same steps: line dancing takes away any inhibition, because nobody stands alone in the spotlight. A cheerful, sociable way to get moving.

Dancing without a partner

No partner, no leading, no asking - you stand in a row and dance along. That makes line dance one of the friendliest formats for anyone arriving alone. Everyone faces the same way, follows the same steps, and turns as a group, which means nobody is ever left standing at the edge.

How the evenings run

Choreographies repeat in blocks and get explained again for every song, so newcomers keep up from the third round. Groups usually mix easy dances for everyone with a few harder ones for the regulars. The music has long moved beyond country: pop, latin and folk are standard in many groups.

What it does for you

Line dance trains coordination and memory as much as fitness - remembering a 32-count sequence while the music runs is genuine brain work. And because groups meet weekly with the same faces, it turns into a social fixture surprisingly quickly, especially for people who came on their own.

Tips for getting started

  • Stand in the second or third row at first; watching the front carries you through.
  • Comfortable shoes with smooth soles are enough - they only need to turn.
  • Do not chase the arms at first; feet first, the rest follows.
  • Give it three evenings - the first one is memory overload for everybody.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need special shoes?

Not to try it out. Comfortable shoes with a smooth sole are enough - they only need to turn without sticking to the floor.

Is line dance only country music?

Not any more. Many groups dance to pop, latin and folk as well; country is the origin, not the limit.
