First aid course

First aid course

Knowledge that counts in an emergency is best refreshed in company. A first aid course is worthwhile, often surprisingly entertaining – and it gets you talking to the others.

Knowledge that fades without practice

Most people took their last first-aid course for their driving licence, often decades ago. Procedures change, and skills nobody ever repeats are simply not available under stress. A refresher takes a few hours and gives back the one thing that matters in an emergency: the confidence to start instead of freezing.

Refreshing works best as a group

Doing it as a private group has double value: you practise with people you know, and the date actually happens because you hold each other to it. Many providers run dedicated group sessions from a handful of participants. Afterwards your whole circle knows the recovery position - a reassuring thought for every shared trip, hike or ride.

What a course actually covers

Beyond the recovery position and chest compressions, courses cover the practical everyday cases: bleeding, burns, strokes, choking, and above all the calm approach - check, call, care. Modern courses spend far more time on hands-on practice than on theory, which is exactly what makes the knowledge stick.

Tips for getting started

  • Refresh every two to three years - untrained skills disappear faster than you think.
  • Book as a group; several providers offer dedicated dates from a handful of people.
  • Practise the emergency call out loud once - knowing what to say saves precious seconds.
  • Check what is in your first-aid kit at home and in the car while you are at it.

Frequently asked questions

How often should first aid be refreshed?

Every two to three years is recommended. Procedures change occasionally, and skills that are never practised are not available in an emergency.

Do I need any prior knowledge?

None. Courses start from zero and are designed for complete beginners as much as for people refreshing old knowledge.
